Bariatric Surgery: Preparing for Your Hospital Stay
What to Expect from Your Mexico Experience
Arriving in Mexico for Your Bariatric Surgery
Upon your arrival at your destination airport, our Ready4aChange driver will meet you at the pre-arrangend pick up area and transport you directly to your hotel (unless you have scheduled a same-day procedure). Your complete medical itinerary as well as any additional instructions for your stay will be waiting for you at the hotel, so you’ll know just what to expect during this exciting journey.
What to Expect at the Hospital the Day of Your Surgery
Arriving at the Hospital
It’s perfectly normal to be nervous for any surgical procedure, but knowing what to expect when you arrive at the hospital can do wonders in putting your mind at ease. The hospitals we work with are full-service hospitals with 24-hour staff, emergency room, and intensive care units – with the exception of VIDA Hospital, which is a specialized high-end surgical center dedicated exclusively to bariatric and cosmetic/reconstructive surgery. All of the surgeons we represent are completely proficient in English.
“The facility was beautiful, everything was up to date. As a nurse that is very important to us to take care of our patients and before I even had pain it seemed they were popping in the door asking if I was ok.”
– Chelsea Randle, RN
The day of your surgery, your pre-arranged shuttle transportation will take you to the hospital where you will be checked in by the hospital staff. After check in, you’ll be taken to a patient examining room for:
- Your pre-op physical
- Blood/lab work
Once complete, you will be met by a physician who will review your procedure with you as well as answer any questions you, or your support person, may have. While you await your procedure, the hospital staff will administer an I.V. and allow you to rest comfortably in the patient waiting area.
Recovering from Bariatric Surgery
Immediately following your procedure, you will spend approximately two hours in the patient recovery area. Once you are ready, the staff will assist you back to your room where you will rest comfortably. While everyone experiences pain differently, most clients typically describe their pain as minimal, as more of a discomfort. However, any pain you have will be treated with I.V. pain medication as needed.
Once you are fully awake, and typically within hours of your surgery, you will be encouraged to get up and start walking. Walking greatly reduces the risk of blood clots and helps alleviate the shoulder discomfort that can be caused by the gas left in your abdomen from the surgery.
Your surgeon and his staff will check on you several times after your procedure. They will also go over any instructions regarding follow up care, post-op diet plan, and be available to answer any questions you may have.
As soon as you are able to tolerate small sips of liquids to maintain proper hydration, your I.V. will be removed. After the normal recovery period for your procedure and once the doctor confirms you are progressing nicely, you will be discharged from the hospital.
Leaving the Hospital
Your pre-arranged transportation will return you to your hotel to rest comfortably. During your 2 – 5 night hotel stay (depending on your procedure), our Ready4aChange patient representative will visit you daily to ensure your comfort.
When your stay is complete, your driver will take you to the airport for your return flight home. While you should be moving around fine on your own, it is important to remember that you have just had surgery and take it easy when handling your luggage and personal belongings. Plan to arrive at the airport with plenty of time to make your way through the airport (and in some cities, customs.)
Prior to your departure, your surgeon will have provided you with all the necessary post-surgical instructions, including your post-op diet plan, as well as all of the appropriate contact information should you have any questions throughout your recovery. As you step on the plane, you are taking a new and exciting journey to a new life.
