Video Transcript

Hi, my name is Dr. Hector Perez. I am a bariatric surgeon here in Cancun with Ready4aChange. Today I’m going to try and answer some questions we usually get from our patients.

Will Weight Loss Surgery Affect Fertility?

The first one is will weight loss surgery affect fertility. And the answer is yes, but in a good way. It’s been proven that obesity is one of the main reasons for patients not to be able to get pregnant. So yes, losing weight will affect fertility but in a good way. Many of patients that have been trying to get babies for more than 5, 10 years – even tried fertility doctors one or two times and they can’t get pregnant – after getting bariatric surgery and losing the weight they get pregnant by themselves without any help. And the only reason is that by losing the weight hormones get back to normal and they are ready to go.

Will it Be Possible to Get Pregnant After Bariatric Surgery?

Another question is is it possible to get pregnant while having already had bariatric surgery, like gastric sleeve or gastric bypass? And I think the answer is pretty much the same as the other one. Yes, you can have a regular pregnancy. Patients are usually afraid of if they are pregnant are they going to be able to eat as much as they need to get the baby growing, and the answer is yes. With bariatric surgery it’s not that you can’t eat. You can eat . and especially if you are eating healthy, your baby and yourself are going to be healthy. Another important thing is that remember babies grow with any reserve they can find in the human body. If a patient is already thin with bariatric surgery and they are not eating well, the baby is going to grow. The problem is going to be that the mother might get a little low in vitamins or whatever so its really important if you’ve already had a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass to eat healthy. That’s on behalf of your baby and yourself.

Can Weight Loss Surgery Affect Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)?

And the last question is does weight loss affect Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)? The answer is yes. Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome is a complex syndrome where many hormones are involved, but it’s been shown that one of the main reasons of the syndrome is obesity. Patients when they get bariatric surgery they start losing the weight and hormones start to regulate to normal. Almost immediately you can see results in less than six months.

I hope this answers your questions about fertility. Thanks for watching.
